How to split your income into categories (and stick to it)
A practical guide to allocating every paycheck into named sections so you always know what is left.
Start with sections, not spreadsheets
Most people track spending after it happens. That is useful for history — not for control. Section budgeting flips the order: you decide where money belongs the moment income arrives.
Name categories that match your real life — housing, family, savings, giving, living costs, goals. The names should feel personal. If a category is vague, spending will be vague too.
Pick percentages you can defend
A split only works if you believe it on a hard week. Start with a simple template (needs / wants / savings), then customize. Adjust until the remaining balances feel honest — not aspirational fiction.
When income is irregular, allocate each payment as it lands instead of forcing a monthly average you do not have yet.
Protect what is left
The point of Allocio is remaining balance per section. Before you spend, you should see what is still available. If a section is empty, that is information — not failure.
FAQ
- What if my categories do not add to 100%?
- Use a catch-all living section for the remainder, or adjust percentages until they do. Clarity beats perfection.
- Can I change my split mid-month?
- Yes — but treat big mid-month changes carefully so you do not erase the signal remaining balances give you.
