What “remaining” should mean in a budget

Spent totals are not the same as a plan. Remaining is allocated income minus spending in each section.

Spent is history. Remaining is decision fuel.

Expense logs answer “where did money go?” Remaining answers “what can I still do?” Both matter — but only remaining prevents month-end shock.

For each category: remaining = allocated − spent. When remaining hits zero, the section is done until the next income.

Why apps that only list transactions fall short

A long list of purchases can feel productive and still leave you guessing. Without sections and allocations, you are reading a diary — not running a system.

FAQ

What if I overspend a section?
That overspend is a signal. Cover it from another section consciously, or note it and tighten next month — do not hide it.
